Three usual causes on well-served properties, in diagnostic order:
-
Blocked water supply line from mineral scale and sediment. Well water carries more sediment than municipal water, and the water line to the refrigerator ice maker accumulates blockage progressively. Cleaning the line ($95 to $150) often solves the problem entirely.
-
Failed water inlet valve. Well water sediment and mineral content corrode the valve solenoid faster than municipal water. Replacement $150 to $220.
-
Failed ice maker module. After the water line and valve have degraded, the module itself often follows. Replacement $180 to $320.
On FPUD municipal properties, the same three components can fail but the timeline is longer and the sediment issue is less prominent. Older galvanised plumbing in some downtown Fallbrook homes contributes iron staining to ice and occasional flow issues.
The diagnostic sequence on any well-served property is water line first, then valve, then module. Starting with the module while the actual problem is a blocked line is a common misdiagnosis on second-opinion calls.
